MĀORI REPRESENTATION.

Back in 2000, Basketball New Zealand no longer had an official Māori basketball programme. The last men’s and women’s Māori teams to carry that mantle travelled to Tonga that year. For a time, it seemed like our story might pause there.

From 2004 onwards, new teams began to rise - travelling overseas and hosting international fixtures here in Aotearoa. What had once been isolated tournaments and marae games slowly grew into a movement. Whānau organised their own teams, iwi created pathways, and Māori basketball lived on through the passion of our people.

For decades, Māori have been a strong presence in basketball at every level - playing, coaching, refereeing, and leading associations. Our people have stood proudly in the black singlet as Tall Blacks, Tall Ferns, and in national age-group teams.

Today, that whakapapa is carried forward in every kaupapa we deliver.
